African American Geographies and Histories Institute
Presented by SCGeo and Historic Columbia and funded by the South Carolina Department of Education, this institute will be held over three Saturdays in Spring 2020: March 21, April 4, and April 25.
This opportunity will encompass field trips to several African American historic sites in Columbia and participants will use those experiences and artifacts to contribute new lesson plans to the South Carolina African American Historic Sites Map.
Sites include Mann-Simons House (March 21); Modjeska Simkins House (April 4); and Hampton-Preston Mansion (April 25). All activities take place in Columbia, South Carolina.
Educators selected to participate will receive a $300 stipend, daily lunches, and teaching materials. The institute is limited to 20 participants. Stipend payment will vary upon participation level (attendance, personal time for lesson development). Preference will be given to 4th, 5th, 8th, and HS U. S. History teachers.
